About two weeks ago, we released the Mutazione Soundtrack to Steam, Bandcamp, Spotify, and more! You might have read in our announcement blog, for instance, that the album was lovingly collected by the game’s composer, Alessandro Coronas in his seaside home on Sardinia or perhaps that the influences on Mutazione’s music stretch from genres like Riot Grrl punk rock to the downtempo sounds of Boards of Canada. But now that it’s out in the wild, we thought we’d talk to folks around the office and in the community to see what they had to say about the album’s release!
As CEO of Akupara Games, it shouldn’t be a surprise that David Logan has listened to the soundtrack about twenty times since it’s come out. “My favorite track is track 4, ‘Ritual’,” he reports. “And I love that it starts with all the energy of the riot grrl songs before transitioning into something more soothing with the instrumentals.” Played in universe by Miu, Tung and Spike for their performance at Band Night, ‘Ritual’ forms the backdrop for some of the most dramatic turns in the story.
Discord user permagurn says their favorite song is the ‘Title Theme.’ “Who is the singer? She has a beautiful voice. Also a lot of the things she says in Italian don’t make a whole lot of sense… but that just adds to the charm!” The lyrics for most of the songs aren’t coherent. “All lyrics in the OST are just about sound and not words .. they have to create a suggestion and not deliver any spoken message,” Coronas has said about the lyrics to the different songs like Ritual, the Title Theme and the four Riot Grrl tracks.
“For me, the suites on the back half of the album are my favorite,” our Community Manager, Buddy Sola, writes. “I’ve spent so much time in Mutazione and these are the songs that defined that experience. I loved just exploring the island, hunting for seeds, making sure I got to every character that wanted to speak to me. The different suites for the different day put me back in that curious exploration mood.” The beginning of the soundtrack focuses on the narratively impactful music, like the leitmotif for the eponymous spiritual guardian in ‘Karoo’ or ‘The Trip’ which underlays the journey to Swamp Island. The back end of the soundtrack, however, is dedicated to long, sweeping suites that take the listener through the songs that underlaid their time having optional conversations with characters.
The music of Mutazione varies so greatly that it’s only fitting for different players to connect with different pieces of the soundtrack. Some are going to resonate with the high tempo energy of Miu’s punk rock, others the slow surf guitar that underscores the low key mood of visiting characters in the late afternoon. If you have a favorite song on the soundtrack, don’t hesitate to let us know by tagging us Twitter, Facebook, Instagram or joining our Discord!
